I am in the process of carving a mute swan head cane handle. The problem I have is with the eyes - I will be using round, glass, 6mm black ones. For reference purposes I have found plenty of pictures of swans on flickr but they are mostly in profile, very few show a swan head on. Presently, the eyes are set in what I hope is the correct position in profile but I do not seem able to visualise how the sight line runs forwards to the beak and how the eyes should be set. Can someone help, please? Thanks Allen |

Thanks Doug, that will be really useful. I have just been looking at the photographs of your bird carvings - they are really beautiful. Would that I could produce work to that standard. Allen |

Thanks Allen. I don't do a lot of birds anymore. I get so much time in them that the prices make them hard to sell.I spend most of my time carving for the wholesale gift market. Doug |

Doug Here's a couple of pictures of the finished product. ![]() ![]() Not up to your incredible standard of carving but what I like is that it works as a cane handle. It fits in the hand quite nicely and does not burn the palm. The wood is elm which gives it the strength necessary for a useable cane. Thanks again for the help. Allen |

So do I ... though I might express it a little differently She's a rippa, beauty, bottla, bonza mate! That's a stick I'd be proud to put my name on for sure. I've never tried a goose/swan head, but I think I might give it a go after seeing your results. Thanks for that! |

That's a great looking swan cane, Allen. You captured the realism on the swan head. Thanks for sharing.
