sorry Larry missed this reply. have to be honest never actually used one but from what i have seen of the art i cant see why it wouldn't work. thats all you really need is to scratch the surface of the bone so the dye/ink/stain takes to the marks you have made.
It really is important, though, that the surface is glass-like smooth before you start.

Simon,

I have been doing scrimshaw for nearly 30 yrs and would be very happy to help you through it. I live in Alaska and have nearly 60 pieces that I cast. Do you have a subject selected? Windsor-Newton makes some of the best ink. 3M makes 2500 grit sand paper that will almost polish your surface. I use White-diamond polish with buffing wheels also. If you can get a piece of plain Corion...practice on that. My e-mail is akboydman@gmail.com if you need more pointers I would be happy to help you with your questions.

Hi folks,

I am a scrimshaner from Alaska. I just finished my first walking stick. I am putting the cast scrimshaw into the diamond willow as inserts. I have worked in several mediums through the years but, now that I am semi-retired...Ha! I am making more time to work on the artwork. It would be my pleasure to help with any questions, I also carve both full and relief for different applications. I just posted pic's of my first two-piece stick....and it has a pic of a small bear. Hope you are feeling better Simon.
