Default Ropeweave cane

This is another redwood material cane hand carved. I has a lot of ropeweave design and further down the shaft, and other goodies. A very difficult job but I sold it for $500. Broke about even verses the time I put in but its fun and makes me enjoy my retirement more.

Two beautiful canes there Slopchops, can you explain to us just how the gold was applied? I am always fascinated by this type of work. Thanks for sharing with us.

Like this one the best, but they're all beautiful. Are they coast redwood or the ones from the sierras? Are they from the limbs?...sharon

There are gold leaf courses offered free on internet, but you will have to look them up.

Hi Slopchops, Great Cane Work. How do you get the taper so nice and straight? Do you do it on a Lathe? I have trted it on a few sticks but don't come out like yours. Nice work . Merle

I made a pattern and glued it on where I was going to carve. Rope weave is hard and red wood is even harder but it is strong.
Thank you.

Hi Slopchops. Thanks for your quick reply, I appreciate it. The bottom of the cane is what I what I was referring to. The long taper for me is hard to keep even and yours looked nice and smooth and of course even. If you don't mind I would like to know your Secret. Thanks Merle

No big secret. I am always prowling around the antique shops looking for unique designs of yesteryear. This design came off a wicker chair I saw. I took a few pictures, took it home, ran it through my computer and through a program called Printmaster. (see them on Ebay)
I then sized them the way I wanted, printed them out, traced off a couple, scanned it back in and made a long line of them on a sheet of paper. Then I took sissors, cut them out, pieced them together into a long strip. Taped one end to my cane and twirled it down getting the balance I wanted and taped it ever 6" or so. The stick is smooth so problem with anything sticking.
I then take a cheap glue stick that kids use in 1st-2nd grades, washable and glue the paper down.
Then start carving. You may want to wrap the unused part of the pattern in newspaper as you work your way down so you won't keep tearing it.
Then I add flowers, leaves and a lot of texture.
Eh? Simple, when you know how.
