Default Re: New Cane and Twisted Stick worker

Thanks again guys. Part of my problem, it appears, is that I'm not sanding well enough. I've been using 100 and 150 grit paper, and it seems I need to get the finer grit papers to finish the sticks off. I had been using steel wool over my final sanding, but Marvin's suggestion of the brown paper bag may do an even better job.

After the steel wool, and wiping clean, I have been using a good coating of tung oil.... letting it dry for 24 hours or so...... then I'd apply another coat of tung oil. I'd apply 3 coats of tung oil in this manner and steel wool after each. After the final wiping clean, I was then using a coat of Minwax finishing wax..... and buffing this after it dried well with an old shoe shine brush.

I am getting a decent result, but your suggestions may really help. I just need to develop more patience, and take much more time. And, perhaps, as Waitpinga Whittler suggested, I need to get over my fear of carving and try that out on a few sticks. I've been afraid of starting carving, because of all the excellant works I've seen here.

Thanks bunches, folks!
