i did not notice the tools being dulled by the bark, but i keep my tools super sharp, it makes carving so much more enjoyable!!!

That's nice for a first piece. I hope you will finish it with the bark remaining on. Too many stick carvers insist that the bark must be removed. It is my opinion that if the bark will stay adhered and is worked into the design it can add a lot of character to the piece.

dnstehly...what you see is what you get, it is done! and WOW! i went to your website, what amazing work!!! i took some 320 grit sand paper and rubbed down all the bark on the stick, and them gave it a liberal coat of minwax antique oil. it dried and sorta stabilzed the bark with a hard satin finish. i like the bark on there myself. to all...thanks for all the good comments on this piece!
