These heads of a drake and hen Call duck were carved from a piece of hardwood off an old stacking pallet.I used pottassium permanganate as a wood dye on both heads of various dilutions to get the desired colours. On the drake i used cow horn and camel bone to reduce the neck to the stick diameter. Both sticks are Hazel, the hens neck was reduced using a different coloured cow horn. |

Hi Norm, Lovely pair of sticks mate. You'll find a lot of talented people here but your technique is different so, speaking for myself, I look forward to seeing more of your work. Your choice of hardwood for the heads is interesting. What tools did you use to actually shape them? |

Thanks for all your comments,J.J.I have been making sticks off and on for about 20 years. Mainly Buffalo/Rams horn crooks/market sticks or antler thumbsticks/walkers.Only tried carving in the last 5 years,i find it very relaxing but time consuming.W.W.i use whatever tools come to hand including a bandsaw, power file for roughing out,and a dremel with a big assortment of cutters/sanders.Kev.B I don't belong to any stickmakers clubs or groups as i found certain "stick dressers"too far up their own backsides.A few more photo's Last edited by ochiba; 12-19-2011 at 05:39 PM. |

Hi Norm I too am new to the forum and I found the pictures of your duck walking sticks. I think they are excellent. I have taken note of the methods you have used. I would be grateful if you could take the time to look at my pictures in the gallery and give me your comments. Keep up the good work ! Mr Carver. |
