I try to make mine at least the eye height of the user and sometimes longer depending on the top carving.

For my wife's grandfather (roughly 6 feet tall), I just made a walking stick 43 inches tall. I based it off his current stick's height. It is the style where his hand is intended to rest on the top, as opposed to holding it around the shaft near the top. Attached is a pic to give you an idea.

I've found that 58" to be the perfect all-around length and after hundreds and hundreds (maybe 1,000's ?) I've never had anyone question it being too short or too long. This length feels good to most folks but it only takes a second to cut it shorter.

Hi Dave; that is my usual length also. I'm 5-11" and that seemed to be a comfortable height.

I have found that about 12" taller than the person works well for rough woods travel.
Much shorter for maintained walkways, roads and inside buildings.

For this area, 48" for adult or 42" for children. We can't cut to fit because they are donated to a local State Park that sells them to people walking through the park as a fund raiser for the "Friends of the Park".

Sales were slow until we started making shorter sticks. Kids like them and the family buys a set. We've also had compliments from shorter adults who finally find a walking stick that fits them!

I guess that when I'm carving sticks it's always best to lean on it being larger than it is smaller... especially when you are bulk carving and don't know who will be using it down the road. They can always cut it shorter but can't add more. That's my rule of thumb anyhow.
