Default Laurel Walking cane

This is Mtn Laurel which grows in the mtns here. Id carved it last year.

Laurel is a hard wood and wont take a stain that well, its a real white wood inside after the bark has been removed.

It has a bears head on the front of the handle and a bears claw on the end of the handle.Finger grips to fit my hand.

A Mtn man,a Native American,a full standing Bear and another Mtn man on the stick part.

Forrest

Thats a nice looking cane. I'm trying to do a walking stick (the wood is 48" high so I think thats a walking stick) I have carved tom wolfe's gargoyle for the top and I have been putting faces in the side it will be a while before it is finished but will try to post it. I think the wood is mahogeny Thanks for sharing I sure like to see yours.

Hi Forrest,

Very nice cane and I assume it's your personal use cane. I like all the carvings on the stick. It must be nice to have access to sticks. I live in the city and even though there are lots of trees, they're all in someone's yard. LOL!

Keep up the good work.

That's a very nice stick! I'm also very fond of laurel and have lots of requests specifically for it in a walking stick. I've also used it for some nice canes. Thanks for posting as you guys are my inspiration as the newest 8 stitches in my knee are healing.

Great looking cane Forrest I love the detail you put into it and the finish turned out great, it really makes the detail stand out.

Great walking stick Forrest. As far as staining it, I've found that using BLO with a little turp and stain of choice for tint works pretty well. Sometimes I just use several coats of BLO which gives it a nice warm glow and lets any figure show through.

I've cut pieces big enough to saw planks out on my band saw. Large pieces of Mtn Laurel have a nice brown heartwood. I've still got some logs in my pile that are as big as 7 or 8 inches in diameter. I sent a nicely figured short log to Keoma a few months ago.
