Default Just a bunch of Lines,Grooves, and Angles

Aspen Wood, Did no advance planning on design.( Kind of Evident HUH) LOL. Did some Chip Carving as I went. Started finish with Teak Oil, did not Seal first, wanted a Dark finish, then sealed with Poly U, then you guessed it Watco Dark Wax, and Feed-n-wax for final finish. Before I started to apply a finish, I rubbed it down with 1500 Grit wet-n-dry Emery Paper. Came out with a nice smooth feel. Not a WOW piece but a good Excersize in practice. It will be going to the Fair this weekend also. Merle

Merle, that came out very nicely for random cuts. I'm sure it will be of great interest at the fair.

Are you using Big Tooth Aspen? How do you like carving on Aspen? Do you find it a little soft?

Nicely done Merle. I enjoy sticks that are carved end-to-end. I also enjoy the "make it up as you go along" design. I think of such sticks as relief from carver's block. Just pick up a stick and carve away at whatever comes to mind. Great piece..it will draw a lot of attention.

Hi Ron, I don't know the kind of Aspen that I have. What is Big Tooth Aspen look like? I'm from the East and would not know what a Aspen tree looked like if someone hit me with one. lol. I found it was good to cut, but it would Crumble at times, so you must keep Stroping your tool, then it's OK. mERLE

Thank you Joy and David for your interest and comments in my stick. Yes, David I too found it to be relief and just cut whatever hits you. Merle

That's quite a staff. Lots to look at and feel with the various textures from chip carving. Many of us carve faces in staff's, its nice to see more with symbols and designs. Well done.

Hi Merle, I don;t know Big Tooth Aspen from Quaking Aspen except for what has been posted here by Mark and others. The Quaking is softer than the BT. I'm sure mine is the Q kind, soft.

Nice job on a stick of random design that ended up most interesting and intriguing. Sometimes making it up as you go is very relaxing and does something for the brain that a laid out design could never achieve.
