Whole bunch of good ideas I have a different approach. Drill a hole through both halves insert aircraft cable the cable will have a threaded end crimped to each end one end could be fixed the other will be just recessed enough to allow the threaded rod to have a lock nut. This is the same principle as post tensioning on structural concrete.

@ nameless: nice find! I wonder though if the rod is long enough, it looks very small..

Again thx for the input all, I will will start working on the staff in the next few weeks and post some pics.
