Default Harley Panhead, Skull and snake cane

I'm working on a new Harley themed cane, got the handle almost finished. Kind of hard to capture with a camera, but its a skull, with a snake curled up through its eye, all over a Panhead engine. The skull is wearing an old leather bombers cap and the pipes sweep up to form the outline of wings. All of this then morphs back into a cane handle, harley fat bob tanks and dash from the 40s, with feathers and the pipes meld into one fishtail exhaust on the back of the handle.

Hi Dew,

Beautiful work, great design and nice chunk of wood (Walnut huh?). The detail is incredible - must have taken an hour or two to carve. Is it for someone special or are you going to sell it?

Thanks,

Merv

Yes, I probably have already 50 hours just in the handle and still not finished. I'm sure by the time I'm through I'll have around 100+ hrs into it. I'm working on the cane portion now, it's an old front wheel and fender from a late forties harley. The handle will sit on top of the wheel and then I will carve the springer forks to go from the handle to the wheel. The cane is still in progress though. Nope, not carving it for anyone, just a crazy idea I had. I'll definitely consider selling it though. Thanks for the comments.
Dewey

I recognized your work from a previous Harley cane you posted. Very nice! I love the texturing on the handle...way cool! I have almost completed a cane I have been working on and I was concerned about the handle being too large and having too many details on the stick, but I am feel better after finding some similarities in your work (although your quality is what I aspire to reach). I browsed your web site also and was very impressed with your other work, especially the mermaid (?) cane! Show us more, please!

That looks fantastic...great detail. Are you powercarving or is it done with hand tools? Is it walnut?

The handle is black walnut. I use all the tools I need to sculpt my design, including a foredom rotary carver, micro chisels, sharp knives, small files and I even have a woodburner too. Most of the shaping I do with the foredom, all the detail and final work was done with chisels and knives. The feathers were contoured and then I used the wood burner to get the minute lines. I'm starting to really just enjoy pulling the compositions together. Thanks for the compliments.

Here are a couple of pics of the Mermaid cane I previously carved. The mermaid cane is Birds Eye Maple with a Walnut handle in the shape of an old cannon scroll.

What exciting work to see! Your details are very inspiring. I'm glad you posted the mermaid staff as well.
Those are the kind of pieces that really require the close-up and personal examination to really appreciate all of the work put into them.

Thanks for letting us see your work.
