Default Hare-headed cane

G'day all,

I was at a friend's house last month and noticed a cane which really caught my eye. The handle was shaped like the head of a hare with the ears forming the grip. The hare was made of some sort of melamine or plastic but I really liked the design so I asked if I could borrow it to make a pattern.

The attached is part of the process and end result. I just finished it today. Hope you like it.

That looks great!
What do you use to seal such a heavy-use item as a cane grip from wood so light in color?

G'day,

All I used here was grape seed oil and bees wax, well rubbed in. Over time oil and grit from the hand gives this sort of surface a unique patina, darkening the surface and leaving the carved cavity sections light. Just the opposite to the effect one gets with a gel stain which darkens the carved cavities and leaves the surface lighter.

The wood used in the carving is Jelutong so any clear varnish would also work, but if you go that way, varnish it before you set the eyes.

Thats a pretty cool handle and nice work but I thought you guys in Australia weren't overly fond of rabbits.

That's why his furry little severed head is stuck on the end of a stick. (The rest of him was delicious)
