Default Handle Patterns

I have been asked to make a walking stick for my daughters mother in law who suffers from MS, she wants a golden retriever handle, i have decided that her mother in law will probably need a derby type handle so that she can grip it comfortably and was intending to carve the retriever head at the front of the handle. Would anyone have a pattern for this type of carved handle, or a pattern for a golden retriever that i could possibly use.

It would be very much appreciated.

Rod

Rod,

I'm sorry I don't have either. But many years ago there was an excellent handled cane idea in Wood Magazine. The author traced the handle design from a hand saw. It gave him both the correct angle for the turn as well as the finger grip design.

I made one using an old pruning saw as my pattern It was quite a beautiful cane when finished if I say so myself. And extremely comfortable in the grip.

Do a google search on canes...you will find all kinds of makers and some of the most outstanding handles you have ever seen...

have Tom Wolfe's book on 86 cane patterns and it has a few dog patterns in it but not a golden retriever but the local library has a book creative cane and walking sticks also by Tom Wolfe and that has the head of several dogs that are carved to put on the front of a cane they may go well with irish's suggestion.
perhaps someone hear on site has the book and can let you know if the golden retriever is in it
