Default Greenman Cane

I have been working on this cane for a few weeks and finally got some finished pictures to post. It is loosely based on a green man cane topper I saw in one of Ms. Irish's books, but unfortunately it doesn't look much like hers! I liked the idea of a bald head for a cane top. The top is bass wood that was drilled out to take the dowel used for the shaft. I tapered the dowel and used a round bit in a drill press to make the little holes all over the shaft. I got the idea from a stick my father-in-law made in wood shop in the 50s. Feels good in your hands. Finished it with linseed oil and lacquer, with a little stain on the shaft and oil paint on the topper.

Wow.. NICE! Thats one cane to be very proud of!! Its so rich looking.

Wich book would this be if I may ask?
And how do you taper a dowel? I've used dowels and really like them..but didnt think of tapering. Do you put something on the tip also?

Marcia.

I like the texture you put on the staff and the details in his hair. Bald head was a good idea too. That is a really nice stick. Thanks for showing it to us.

The idea/pattern was from "Wood Spirits and Green Men" wood Carving and Wood Burning Patterns Book by L. S. Irish and it was supposed to be the "Green George" but I am embarassed to say you will see little resemblance. I didn't leave enough wood for some of the hair and discovered that I should probably add ears! I have an old lathe that I used to taper the dowel, but I did have to cut off 5-6" to get it to fit between centers. I have added a rubber tip. I thought about using a regular crutch tip, but I rummaged through my odds and ends and found some rubber furniture tips. The one I used is about an inch round piece of rubber about 1/2" thick that has a little dimple and a hole in the middle that i used a small screw to attach it to the bottom of the cane. It worked pretty well and could easily be replaced. I beleive it is just a non-skid furniture tip, bumper, or foot that I found at a hardware store.
