I took some inch and a half X inch and a half stock and practiced on some faces here. I thought I would post them and see what everyone thinks! These are my first ones. I found out that the trick to this is sharp tools, for working in small details. These were kind of fun to carve. I tried to do different expressions, but see I have a long way to go! Rich |

Your doing very well Rich. Just keep carving and they will get better and better. I would say you want more shadow around the mustache and nose. Make a wedge cut along the bottom of the cheek, mustache and side of the nose and you will be surprised at how much depth it makes and also sets up the mustache carving. keep them coming! Corey

Showing real promise mate. I am particularly impressed the way you tried different things, expressions and facial features. The more of this sort of thing you do the better you will get. I use golf balls for practice of facial expression. Just a suggestion if wood availablity is ever an issue.

Real great start. Try a v chisel to make lines in the beards, make them look like hair. You can get a better expression on the faces if you don't have all the eyes looking straight, use a pencil to draw them in looking down , up sideways and when you get one you like just do it. I've been doing faces for years and love doing them. Have also sold a number of them. Mine are usually done in Basswood but I have done them in Butternut and Cedar. Try a piece of Cedar fence rail, these look fantastic. Don |

| I love the last one on the right! It looks like he is biting someone in half. The 'rear' half hanging from his mouth! *__- |

Your faces are looking pretty good. I am just starting on carving faces also. I posted a couple pics on a thread asking for help on making the beards look more realistic. The responses I got should help me quite a bit. I haven't had time to try them yet though. ![]() Here is a link to the thread: Looking for input In case you wanted to see what kind of responses I got. I really enjoy carving and look forward to working on practicing anytime I get. Again, you're doing great!

That's some fine work there I like the variety. That's one thing I struggle with - I learnt how to do woodspirits from a book and can knock out that style with ease, changing things to get some variety now that's hard |
