Default Eagle stk

Hey folks,

Carved my first eagle head and have set it on this stk. I am pleased with it but, realize that it still needs more work....hope you enjoy!

Very nicely done. The scrim insert is a nice too. It does appear, to me also, that the head could be a little larger. IMHO

Its obvious you have a carving talent... the eagle head, from what I can see of it is fantastic. Sometimes when applying realistic carvings to stickmaking, one has to 'distort' things a bit to make it work as a stick. The abrupt change from carving to stick makes me feel like there is more to do with it. Perhaps painting past the joint line will give it less of an 'abrupt' feel, or maybe a larger head in proportion to the stick....

Also, I'm not sure about both a carved head and the scrimshaw insert on one stick. With two such quality pieces on the one stick, they can each distract the eye from the other. Personally, I'd make it one or the other, unless you want to make the skrimshaw a sort of 'trade mark' in which case, I'd make it a lot smaller so it would distract from the carving.

All this is just my opinion of course. Sticks are very subjective things.
Keep at it... stick carving is a different medium to just sculpture and it takes some practice to produce balanced work, even for very good carvers.

very nice work. do you intend to colour, stain or pyro the eagle head, or will it be left as it is?
