Here's a few pics of a cane i made some time ago with what i call a poor man's ferrule, a spent shotgun cartridge ( readily available, easy to replace and free!) anyway it's a cow's horn handle on an Ox bone spacer set on a Hazel shank. there is a pewter spaniel with a duck in his mouth that has been set in resin then shaped and polished. as usual any C&C welcome. kev

Good idea with the ferrule Kev,protects the stick from the usual W&T plus you could use 4.10 cartridges on smaller diameter sticks. Norm Reeves. |

kev.b would you care to reveal how you did the shaping and polishing on the handle/knob? Great contrast between the bottom and the top! I could lean on that one for a while. |

Hey Kev, Shows a great deal of creativity and skill. I did a powder horn for a black powder shooter once and really liked the way the cow horn polishes up....the 12g is 7/8th inch....let me know if you have any ideas for 11/4" diameter. The brass washers that I found are too expensive for me. Again, great work...thanks for sharing! Greg |

I use rubber furniture tips on the bottom of my canes. You can buy them from any big box store. Be sure that they are rubber and not plastic. They are a lot less expensive than cane tips or crutch tips and look better. Marvin |

Robson Valley for shaping the horn i firstly used coarse files to near the finished diameter then varying grades of sand paper (60,120, 240) then 0000 wire wool and T-cut polish, or any metal polish and buff to shine. Have faith though because the first time you run a file or coarse sandpaper over the resin it scratches and makes it look ruined but as the grades become finer and takes shape you'll see the result come to you. the clear glass like finish of the resin only really comes after the polish though.
