Default Carving practice for wood spirit walking sticks

Well this is my first real attemept at carving a wood spirit please see picture below. I have tried carving three more faces picture of one of them below with cut eyes. I am practicing in pine which is quite soft to carve but crumbles very easily. I borrowed the book Wood Spirits by Lora Irish which was a real help with the profiles and eyes, I have just dotted the eyes for the moment untill I get more profcient. Once I have mastered the art of carving wood spirit faces in Pine, my wood shafts of Hazel and Blackthorn should just be about seasoned however, I will have to reduce the size of the carvings for my sticks though. I must aquire a 2 / 3mm gouge for the eyes and mouth, not to happy with the mouth though. I am currently using Flextools which I find very good. Thanks for looking.

G'day mate, Well, its a pretty good start. Keep at it. It sounds as though you know where you want to go. If you want to look at any other types of woodspirit faces you could have a look here. Stickmaking • Login

Thank you all for your positive comments. I try to carve at least one a week. Its strange but you seem to think you have mastered certain areas of the face, then its another area. Key areas for me at the moment are mouth and eyes, I am waiting until I get my gouges through before having a real go at the detailed eyes, but its all good fun, that last practice was carved in Hornbeam wood very hard part seasoned.
