I'm no expert but I was told by an expert that the trick to carving hair is to first start with a wide gouge to give the hair waves and movement, then a smaller gouge to define the hair more...then if you want more shape, use your V tool and cut into the gouge paths. Then take a detail knife and make some random cuts in areas of the hair to give them some depth. Patrick |

Hi Michael, When I'm carving hair I will start by cutting deep "waves" or S's into the wood to create the depth and flow of the hair that I'm looking for using my detail knife. The way I do this is I'll cut almost like a stop cut for my first cut and then I'll come back at it with a second cut at about a 45% angle. I'll do several depths and then I'll start playing with the "v" tools to create the look of the hair. I have about 4 sizes of "v" tools and when I'm really playing I'll use all of them but usually I'm using the average size and then I have a mini that I like to use to get the finer hair. After that, depending on what I'm creating I'll wood burn it as well to get additional depth, texture and detail. I hope this helps and hasn't confused you too much! |

I tried carving hair, knife kept slipping off, had to switch to match sticks! Hard to keep 'em in the vise too!
