Default Can you carve a hiking stick top that would cover a camera mount?

I got this message in my online shop and I cannot do what she is asking. Please take a look and contact her if this is something you are able to do for her.

I am looking for a nice handle to put on my walking stick/monopod to cover my camera mount while not taking photographs.

Thanks. Dakota

Hi Dakota,

The brass couplers that I just bought from Treeline have the same thread as a camera mount and could be attached to any walking stick with a bit of fitting.

I think she wants something carved to slide on top of it. I misunderstood her, at first, and on second reading decided that she wanted something you would probably do starting with drilling a flat bottom hole with a Forstner drill bit...the carving something in the block.I know what it is like to want something and not know exactly how to express it. I think that is what she is looking for though. That said, I think I'll check with Treeline to see what it is that you are talking about. Thanks for the assist!!! Dakota.

I just took another look at your site. I think you have EXACTLY what she is talking about. Good luck!

Possibly the lady is refering to a hiking stick instead of a walking stick. I do know that many people use a hiking stick as a unipod for am camera mount. If so, all you would need is a thread mount epoxied into the top of the stick with a screw on cover over it for when she is not using the camera. You would need to know how tall she is so that the stick would be the right heighth for her to use the camera on it.

Seeing I'm far enough away from the US to be out of the question in terms of the supplier of the above piece of equipment... I'll stick my oar in just for fun.

I think the first thing seems to be to find out exactly what your client wants. There seems to be some confusion about it. It sounds to me like she already has a monopod, probably a telescoping one, and she wants a 'handle' to mount on the camera mounting bolt at the top so she can use it as a walking stick or cane when not in use as a monopod. So...

1. Are the above assumptions true?

2. If so, does she want to use her monopod as a staff or a cane? (or both)

3. If as a cane, what sort of 'handle' is she talking about? The camera mounting bolt is not going to be strong enough to cope with a lot of side force which is what would happen if the handle were some sort of crook shape. It will break in short order. A knob-type handle might last a bit longer but I'd still be worried about it long term. The camera mounting bolt really wasn't designed for that aplication. I suspect that all that pushing and pulling will eventually cause a failure at the joint.

4 If as a staff, then the 'handle' won't really be a handle at all but a cap piece which can be just about anything. However, her grip will now be on the shaft of the monopod somewhere. If this is a telescoping monopod, then she's going to be gripping bare metal which doesn't appeal to me much. Maybe a lashing on the shaft in leather or cord would make it more comfortable and practical, but it would have to be done in such a way as to not interfere with the telescopic aspects of the monopod.

Just some thoughts... hope they help.

I made this in 08 on top of a Catus. this is a camera attatchment not a cover. it's held on by a Magnet. Got it from Tree-line. Was going to put my camera on to show how it looks ,but only have 1 camera. Merle

Thanks, Marvin. The more people write, I go back to her inquiry and am more confused than before. :P I know the difficulty of wanting to ask a question but not knowing the vernacular for asking it. Happens to me all the time as a wood working novice. I passed it on to Don at Old Crow, because he had pics of hiking sticks using the same terminology she was using. I don't know names of camera accessories either. It was beyond my borders, so thought I'd throw it out there in hopes that she could connect with someone more knowledgeable than I am. Feel free to contact her if you like. I have not heard back from her. Thanks for taking the time to help someone out! Dakota
