I make my own ferrules and they get better and easier to do each time. The bottom is 12 gauge shotgun brass with a screw(the primer is knocked out) holding it on to the stick. A template is made to cut the sheet brass from, as I like them to be 4". The sheet brass is nailed to the stick and shell brass. The long seam is doubled for strenght.

Sadly, you are quite correct. Since American fashion no longer considers a walking stick/cane a neccessary part of the male attire it is much harder to find parts here. In Great Britain and other places where sticks, and stickmakers, have a stronger presence they are more easily found and more affordable.
