Default Blank for first walking stick

I found this a few days ago on a walk
i plan on carving the limbs at the top into little bumps and thinning the handle significantly.

Ive read nothing about walking sticks

what wood is this?
suggested finish?

Looks like it may be a little short for a walking stick but a good size to be a cane. I can not help you with the wood, looks a bit like it could be oak but that is a guess.
As far as a finish a good oil like linseed oil, Tung oil works well. I use a coat of tung oil and let it dry 24 hours then 2 or 3 coats of a satin finsh oil base spar varnish. That is just my preference.

it looks like sassafras to me if it is it will smell like apple-jack cereal that would be my best guess not knowing where u live it would be hard to say u may get a tree book from the library or search pics of trees or tree barks and match it up with 1 of them it looks like a hard wood the bark and inter skin looks like it may be little soft
