Default Basswood Cane Handle

Eagle head carved into a basswood cane handle. This basswood cane measures 39-inches in length. The handle is based off a derby style handle. Half way through the carving a different idea struck for the actual handle part of the cane.......always to late though! The stylistic feather makes this portion of the handle a liittle busy looking. Back to the drawing board!

Comments and Critiques always welcomed. Thanks for looking.

Hi Mark,

The eagle's head is very nice but I agree with you about the feathers looking busy.

For someone who doesn't carve many animals, you did an amazing job here. I like that the head doesn't overpower the cane itself. I think its the smaller size you have chosen for the bird. I'm partial to the approach you have taken. Not sure how the feather work on the handle will feel for the user though.

I like the eagle but agree that the handle looks uncomfortable.

Thumbs up Re: Basswood Cane Handle

Excellent but I also think it could be uncomfortable and maybe gather crud in the deeper ruffles. keep up the amazing work and thanks for your articles in WCI I enjoyed very much your elf and santa ornaments.

Beauty of a cane Mark, but perhaps if the handle were carved shallow it might be more comfortable for the user. The feathering is attractive, but perhaps just too deep. As a user, I would find that hard on the palm. I like the idea though and the Eagles face is excellent.

I really like that you didn't make the eagle overly fierce or over sized. If it were mine I would wrap a wide leather band around the handle and leave the feathers protruding from the back of the band.
