Anyone ever carve a ball in cage? And if you did did you use a pattern? Or did you just wing it?

I'd like to try one any advice is welcome.

Hey Michael,
Just google search for free pattern for a ball in a cage, you will find an easy to follow pattern to use. I done one about a month ago, and I used a piece of 1 1/2 inch square piece of white pine. But if you can get a piece of basswood it would be easier to carve. a pic when you get finished with it. After you do one you will want to do another one. I have just started another one myself, this time out of basswood. I will post a pic also when finished. Keith

I actually done on the first try, and without any bloodshed. Working on another one now though, this time with links added.

I have carved several ball-in-cage pieces over the years. The recent ones are in butternut and have some interesting details. Look in the member galleries for photos.

I have done a number of ball-in-cage type carvings, including a rabbit in a cage, a dove in a cage, and a moonshine jug in a cage. My first try ended up breaking while seperating the ball from the bars and my second while rounding the ball.
