Living in the upper Midwest farm country, I don't have access to good tree variety for carving. Initially tried projects in Cottonwood and Box Elder only to have them explode with cracks. I understand the drying wood process, but some woods just deteriate with aging. Ash is the most common tree here and it carves very well, holding detail and it is very strong. You have to sharpen chains, chisels and gouges and have a lot of patience to work with it. I was given a ten foot log of walnut by a tree service and working with it opened up a whole new world of carving enjoyment! The aroma, texture, grain and color are "to die" for. I envy the folks posting here that have access to tree varieties that carve so well.
