This is my first attempt at chainsaw carving, it is supposed to be a bear cub in a stump, but there isn't much stump left. I don't have the marbles for eyes or the finish on it yet, but what do you think--be BRUTAL.

I used a Homelite electric chainsaw(home Depot) with a 16 inch bar and 4 1/2 inch angle 2 grinders (Harbor Freight) with a chainsaw blade and a sanding disk. I need to get a torch.

Yeach! Looks like a cow! Is that really a carving?? Is that brutal enough? I sure hope you know I'm kidding! Really, that is a cute guy...much better than what I would come up with if I was to try chainsaw carving. If I had any skill with a chainsaw, maybe I could offer some suggestions, but the bear looks just fine to me. Al |

I've never tried chainsaw carving but for a first attempt I would say you did just fine. Paul

I've seen worse first attempts Suggestions for your next one: -Make the snout and forehead {to front edge of ear} the same length. -You want less height difference between the snout and forehead. -Taper those surfaces from the base of the snout back to make the head less blocky. Think of it as a cone like shape. -The snout is tapering out as it goes down. AFTER the mouth is should be tapering back in. Essentially, the bottom lip fits inside the top lip. Basics... Unless you have a pug, your dog is a great reference for the nose, lips, ear and eye position. You yourself are a good reference for how arms are attached. Note that your bears' arms are coming out of the front of his chest. I think this photo will illustrate the changes I've suggested. Note this one is NOT using marbles. The eyes are burnished in with a home made eye tool spun in a die grinder.

Thanks for the comments, I will make those changes to the standing bear I am currently trying to carve and maybe go back and fix this one this weekend. Love your website. |
