Default hi all

New chainsaw carver here...something I have been interested in for awhile, I run a tree service and landscape maintenance company and own a small sawmill...located i. Smithfield virginia..
Anyhow, a friend bought me the art of chainsaw carving, and I tried a couple things, and got hooked...uh oh. I had better produce something that will sell soon...the wife is liable to use the saw on me..
Using a Stihl 290 to block out and an ms 180c for a detail saw...probably add a makita electric sometime soon.

Zopi,
It sounds like you have all the saws and wood you will need and are lacking only some experience. Other than tools, I'd recommend getting Mike McVay's video 7 Easy Pieces. With practice, each of these pieces can be carved with a regular roller tip bar using only one tank of gas.

Blimey Zopi.

You are off and running. Well done.

I feel my first attempt will cause this.

Bears sell. If you want to make money carving logs the routine goes something like this:
carve a bear
carve a fish
carve a bear
carve a dragon
carve a bear
carve an eagle
carve a bear
carve a dog
carve two bears...

"Bears pay the bills."

As for that Makita electric, I recommend you hold off on that until you figure you cannot do without it.

Star....to be fair, that wood spirit is my sixth or seventh carving...and I have been involved with art for years...it does not matter how good the attempt is...what matters is putting blade to wood, or chisel to stone or brush to canvas and creating something your own...
Just remember...there are no mistakes...you just changed your mind....
A die grinder makes a nice eraser...

twoclones...thanks! So what you are saying is that not only will I be able to do bears sleeping, but will be as sick of them as a college student on a package of Ramen? I had sort of gathered that bears were the center of the roadside universe....Since I live in Smithfield,Va, I probably better learn pigs pretty quick too...the ham capital as it were...
