Hello Everyone
Haven't posted anything in a while, but I did watch Jenks carve his horse head ...great job. After I get back from Manitoulin Island next week my wife and I are off to Texas. After several years wintering in Florida we are going to give South Padre Island a go this winter for the first time. My question is should I take maple staffs down to make some walking sticks or is there wood readily available in Texas to use? I don't plan on taking my chainsaws down with me but will take some chisels and knives to make a few "sticks" any suggestions.......Thanks S.T.

ST .. I live on the Gulf coast very similar to Padre Island and you better bring some maple sticks just for certain .. Not much hardwoods around Padre , mostly beaches .. but there are hardwoods in the woods of east Texas .. and around west Texas ..

While on your way here if you have time .. check out the woods of Texas .. Lot of oak down this way and cedar ..

Pretty WIndy at Padre Island, if you get tired of the wind head to Mc Allen or Mission. Plenty of Senior RV communities and lots of carving going on around there. I would bring some wood with me, if I were you. but there is wood also available from some of the communities wood shops. you might find some drift wood if you head north up the beach. I would suggest 4 wheel drive and be careful... I know GreenGate Grove in Mission, has wood carving as an activity and also Llano Grande rv park in Mercedes Hope this helps..
