Default Finishing question

I am about to finish up my first chainsaw carving of a bear in a stump. I will finish sanding and sealing and then post picks on Sunday.

My question is I have a small can of --Minwax Water based Polycrylic protective finish in semi gloss-- Is that ok for an outdoor painted carving?

What would you recommend for my area--Bakersfield CA--low 30's at night with fog in winter and over 100 in the summer? We get very little rain-less than 6 inches a year.

Thanks, It is because of all the nice posts in this forum that I have started chainsaw carving, thank you for posting pictures and being so encouraging to beginners.

Thanks
Jeff

I have found that Thompson water seal work well on my out door projects. It is a deck sealer. You can get at most all home improvement stores.

I would suggest using a good spar varnish, with UV inhibitors. You'll have to re-coat every couple of years but your carving will be well protected against the elements. I don't know anything about the Thompsons water seal but if it's recommended for decks I'm sure it will work on outdoor carvings as well. Dan
