Hi all, I haven't started chainsaw carving yet and I am trying to learn as much as possible before I start. I have a dumb question, I will be buying logs from a tree trimming service and I was wondering how soon after the tree is cut down can you start carving? Does it matter what kind of wood? What's a good price for logs? My parents have a Brazilian Pepper tree they are going to cut down next year, is that a good wood to carve? Thanks, Jeff |

You can carve green wet wood no problem. As far as type of wood any wood can be carved with a chainsaw. For me I dont like wet yellow pine it is sticky cured yellow pine is just ok. I like hard wood red oak is the best for what I do.

If you haven't done so yet, take a look for the videos of various chainsaw carving competitions. Here in the north, the monumental pieces are often glue-ups made from 12" x 12" bridge timbers. Usually spruce (Picea), a softwood. Logging companies often have salvaged bridge timbers when they deactivate an area where they were working. |

I do not buy wood {yet}. The type of wood which works best for you will be determined in part by where you like. Softer woods like cedar and pine are the favorite in wet climates. In dry climates those species crack very badly and hardwoods work better. The same applies to which sealant will work best for you.

Ask your Tree Service for some big 'junk' wood. This is usually conifer wood that has no value as firewood or lumber. They'll likely drop it off for free or a little money to cover their time. Most tree services have to pay to dispose of this wood. Watch for metal, especially if the wood comes from a suburban area. |
