HEy Jeff, The carving is looking great! Are ya sealing it or covering it with anything as you do it because if that is White Pine, it will probably want to crack bad on you & I wouldn't want to see that happen as it is coming along real well? Thanks, Robbin PS lloks like ya got a few nice logs there also! |

Hello Jeff, I'm new to this section but have been e-mailing a bit with Robbin. It looks like it's shaping up nicely. If it was me I'd keep it fairly simple. Decide what the main focus should be and try not to distract the viewer's eye from that focus. It's also easier to have movement and flow if the base is not to busy. Just my opinion - art is nothing if not subjective, ha! Robbin is right about keeping it covered when not carving. Even sunlight can cause checking. |

Garbage bags, an old tarp anything to keep the ultra violet rays off and keep the moisture in and the thinner areas from drying out too fast and cracking. Artistic passion is something that likely all of us understand. It is your vision/creation and part of your soul and will be a thing of beauty when done. BTW - Once you finish roughing out the base, you may want to think about tipping the carving on its side and hollowing out the underside like a thick edged bowl - it makes the carving lighter and the more uniform thickness the wood is then less prone to cracking. When it is stood up again it won't show but you've gained weight reduction and stability. Over time you'll learn the proper sequence of developing a carving, so that it is safe to handle - rule of thumb - details last. |

hey everyone i took your advice schizoidlogger and started to hollow out the base of the carving, just a bit tho because im not done carving the base fully. its been freekin cold out there but i did a bit more over the past few days. robbin- colin told me you know alot about saws, the other day my redmax g3200 started sounding funny. colin came over and droped off the chain( thanks) and i tryed to start it and for the first time ever it wouldnt run. so know i have to hold the gas on and pull to start it, do you have any idea what would be the ploblem?? would it be the cold? i would like to know what i have to do to keep it running well. thanks jeff |
