Hey Zarn,

Denny Rogers has a book out through Fox Chapel called The Illustrated Bald Eagle. It's a great referance book for feathering.

I'll second the vote for the Illustrated eagle. Great book.

The author has also written several other great books on birds of prey and owls.

Another tip I learned from a carver @ Ridgway is to get tracing paper and trace out pics of eagles (or anything) you'd like to carve. I think it's helped me to learn the way stuff really looks. I can't draw at all, but I can trace. Also, it's using a different part of the brain to learn your subject by putting your hand eye coordination.

At 38 years old, I've done more tracing than I've done since elementary school.

Hi Trevor, Your probably not going to ever talk to me again! If you take them wings off & flip them around the bird may be able to fly buddy! Funny things our mind does hey! Good advice on the book recommended & also Dicks example has awesome flow to it! the turtle looks great! I was approached by a fellow that runs the Raptor Conservatory of Canada south of me here & been meaning to go for the invited visit to see the all the birds first hand which is the best experience especially when he offer to let me right at them! Sorry Trevor but this is what I seen as soon as I viewed the images & nice to see ya givin' her!
Thanks, Robbin

Thanks for the picture Mr. Dick Tilley. That is a great referance. And I will also Try the Tracing Paper highsierabear.

As for you Robbin I can't learn anything if know one tells me what is wrong. So I do appreciate constructive critism. And Know that you have pointed that out I can change that.

Thanks Trevor

Zarn,
You've gotten some great suggestions for eagle reference [I use Dennys book myself] but you haven't carved an eagle... I want to head you off at the pass before you make what appears to be an all to common mistake.

I have seen, online, a lot of bird carvings with the beak of a seagull yet painted to look like a bald eagle... I recommend you not only get the book but that you sit and repeated sketch details from that book. Doing so will help you to literally 'see' the eagle in the wood.

Nice tortise!
