Question Chain Saw carving Bears

# 1

How do you carve in the fur on the bear with the chain saw without being too deep or harsh of a cut. Without having to use a V gouge or would there be another to that would have to be used ?

# 2

Where could I get chain saw carving patterns of bears ?

When you do the hair on the bear you use the side of the chain in swirling motion. It is very much easier to do it using a quarter or dime tip. By using the side of the chain you are not going too deep and there is little chance of kick back. Having said all this practice is the key. If you are doing a bear take a log and practice until you have the proceedure down pat.

Google robbinsamazingart.com. He has a tutorial of different techniques to carve bear fur with a chainsaw. Hope this helps!

GAcarver that was a great link on the bear carving. The next to last pic on that page. The lady has a tiny chainsaw. Looks like 6 or 8 inches and very small. Is anyone familer with this saw? Who makes it? Where you could get one?

The yellow extension cord in the photo suggests that she is using an electric chainsaw. The small size is probably the result of a carving bar rather than the saw.

The lady in the photo is Michelle Scoggins, her husband is Dayton who is shown carving a bear for other carvers including his wife. Dayton is one of the finest carvers for wildlife. The saw after looking at it might be a Makita 5012B electric with an 8" bar. The saw in the picture looks blue with a black cap which is where the Makita is located. Dayton normally uses Huskies, and Echos the small 346. His web site is Artistry in Wood.com. They would be able to answer your question. Tom
