Default Big Horse Head

Here's what I've been working on. This is WIP - I need to refine the eyes, smooth the lips, some other things. It's made from a big piece of white oak, same tree I made my previous horse head from. I have finished that piece and will post pictures of both over the weekend.
Something I learned: for any new subject, do a first piece and get all anal about the details, learn as much as possible about the skeleton, musculature, and expression. Then just quick carve a second piece and apply all you've learned.
You'll see what I mean when I post them side-by-side. Without the distraction of sweating the details I (think I) was able to express the horse much better.

Hi Schaef, Looking great so far! It is funny you mention this logic as the two (stil in the process) I did a while back, on the first one & just gave her, no reference pics, nothing & more people like the first one than the second which I used Chester Amstrong's version & took my time with it but one thing I did realize wit Chesters is that he exaggerates many of the intricacies of the horse form (especialy on the head) with more than realistic muscles etc? Can't wait to see the two together?
Thanks, Robbin

Very nice.
What tools are you using for these pieces?

On this piece it was mostly a Stihl 361 followed by a 192, then a kutzall donut on an angle grinder and smaller tools on a die grinder. 90% chainsaw.
Using Cedarshield in hopes of minimizing cracks but it's green wood so low expectations.
Hope to post the comparison pictures tomorrow.
