Hello and welcome, I like the bear it is in the flat plane style and that is a cool looking style to me. You have only been carving a year and you have a definite style.

J,

I'm impressed with the variety of work you've done. You must be an aggressive learner not afraid to take chances, even taking on some non-traditional subjects like the snake, for instance. And judging from the turtle seen in the background behind the bear, where you've curved up the shell at the edges, you have an eye for detail; also the scale rotation on your dragon belly.

So to offer you CC as requested: Each piece is blocky and could be made much finer by additional smoothing - think of the bar as a butter knife and smooth the surfaces to remove signs of facets on your curved surfaces. Those edges cause the eye to stop and think, rather than take in the full form. Get a grinder and take it even further.

I would say focus on one piece at a time and go for more details. Let's take the eagle. If you look for 3 things that distinguish an eagle from other birds, those might be size, white head, hooked beak. You've got those. Ask what are the next 3. One would be the frown over the eye that creates a cool shadow. Put it in. Go on to another feature, like talons. They're rounded and pointy. You get the picture. Keep going until you've reached your objective, somewhere between perfection and production. Maybe you're already where you want to be, but if not, there's the path.

One test of your work is - how long does it take someone to figure out what you've made when standing at a distance. If they go "wow, a goat!" you're there. If you have to tell them it's a goat, and they cock their head and say ....."oh, yeah", that means you've got more work to do!

Judging from your current work and eye for detail, you should be able to make great progress in short order if that's your goal. Good luck!

Schaef,

Thank you for the CC. I have been wondering why the bears always had the blocky look and just couldnt think of how to fix it even though it was as simple as rounding it off with the saw. I am most definately going to try working on 3 things at a time whenever i carve somthing to make it look better. Thanks for the feedback.

Here are my most recent carvings... the owl was the last one that i made. i will put all the information i got in this thread to use and post pictures of the results somtime within the next week.
