Default wooden indians

I have just finished 12 & 1/2 foot red cedar totem for my daughter. (started 3 years ago-then quit) Roughed out with 4 inch grinder wheels and detailed with my automach.

My son has requested a cigar store type indian.

Since posting is new to me, I'm not sure how to find ideas. So I am asking where to find pictures or patterns for an indian. I have a cedar log about 16 inches across. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks,Bob

Harold Enlow has a book that contains a pattern for carving a cigar store Indian.

OOPS.....I goofed. I said that Harold Enlow has a pattern for a cigar store Indian....I checked my Enlow books and didn't find a cigar store Indian.

Looked thru my stacks of Chip Chats and found the Cigar Store Indian pattern that I made a number of years ago. It was by Mary Duke Guldan, in the Jan./Feb. 1993 issue, volume 40, number 1.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions. Dull Knife you were correct about Harold Enlow his book was published in 1979, it sold for $2.95. My son found one on ebay for my birthday. The indian will be made for his lock shop, so he wanted to be sure I had insperation. I have made a few roughing cuts mostly to knock off white wood that has gone pithy. When I have something to photograph will try my first picture post. Bob

Bob,

I searched the internet for pictures and patterns for a cigar store Indian and the best one I found was the Enlow pattern. There is a picture of my interpretation in my gallery - Cherry, about 12" tall. I have a 16" diameter cherry log waiting for another, slightly larger attempt. I estimate that the Indian will stand about 4' tall with about a 12" base.

One thing to watch for - in the Enlow pattern, the headdress feathers don't match up from the front to side views, so don't try to cut them too close to start, although, I started from a piece of square stock and a log might present a challenge transferring the patterns.
