Default Whitetail on a Gunstock

I finished another gun stock and this is the best yet!! I am pushing myself more and more to up the ante every time I start a new one.. I guess there is a higher risk of screwing up but if I don't ... well... I get better.

The Stock is a Short Action Bolt Rifle... I think Remington >> Walnut wood with very nice grain. It has a high gloss finish on it that I am not crazy about because it shows every nick and flaw.

I used the Oak leaves to cover up the old outdated lines around the checkering. It had a "Backgammon" look to it and begged to be changed.

I was SOOO worried about doing this picture... I have a issue with drawings that are not proportional... I hate it! So I didn't want to make this fatal error... So it was a SLOW process! At least around the head/eyes/ear/ant;er area... the rest went surprisingly fast.

I removed the original checkering but left the outlined area... I carved oak leaves over the ends to dress them up and take them from typical to artwork! Then I carved a basket weave pattern in to it so that it looked like the leave sit on top of them. Makes you want to just grab it and get a closer look! It feels great in your hand too!

Continued on the next post....

Here is the foregrip area... I kept the weave and leaf theme going up here to match the grips and I think it turned out pretty good. the Basket weave is by far the most time consuming part of doing this project... if you do it right it looks great but if you make a mistake it sticks out like you wouldn't believe!

Here is the "Before" picture on the forgrip to give you a clearer picture of what I was talking about with the outdated original design... This is your average 1980's pattern.

So... anyone here need a gun carved??

Great job!
You're right, you have to push yourself to get better.
You have to take a chance, and your's paid off.

Love it!

Wow vey nice, I've always wanted to do some carving on a gun stock but haven't been brave enough to try one yet.

I really like the basket weave and the deer is incredable.

But I think the leaves are maple not oak never the less they look great also.

I think the next gun show I go to I'm going to buy an old stock to pratice on.

great job!

Stickman... Go to a gun shop and ask them if they have any cracked stock or stocks with flows in them... they will usually throw them out anyway if the MFG doesn't want to have them shipped back to them. I have to say that it is scary to start carving on a gun >> even one that is never going back in use... The first one I did was one they said was "Trash" and after I got finish with it I could throw it away... I brought it back to them and they LOVED it! They put the gear back into it and it is now sitting on display! It was a $189 Rugar 10-22 and now they are ask about $1000!
So it can't hurt to ask for one!
