Default Which machine for carving?

Hello, my name is Steve and I'm new to the board. I have been carving skulls in hardwood using dremels. See you guys use other machines for carving instead of dremels. My question is what would be the best machine for what I do? I like the looks of the small hand peices on some of the machines.
Would the fordome 1050 do it? Or is it mostly just for fine detail work? I would have to hog off a bit of wood also.
Or do I just need one of the hanging type units?
I tried the flex shaft on the dremel and did not like it. But I did not hang it.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
Steve///

Steve, the type of power carver you use is really a matter of preference-one brand over another. I have a Foredom, a Dremel, a Ram and a WeCheer. For really hogging off wood I use the Foredom, it has a larger motor so more power, the Dremel has a flex shaft that is on a hanger and has different size collets so I can use smaller bits. I wil use this to start the detailing of a carving, or to smooth it out with diamond bits prior to carving in the fur on my bears. The Ram and WeCheer I use for really fine detail. If I had to choose just one I would go with the Dremel, it will take off a reasonable amount of wood when roughing out and will still give you a detail tool when needed. I run my tool through a foot pedal from an old sewing machine so I don't have to reach up to turn it on or off. The WeCheer is not quite as aggressive as the Ram but works great for detailing. The WeCheer is the newest of the bunch, about 3 years old, the others are all about 10 years old and have been used and sometimes abused. I have had to replace brushes and the inner shaft on the Foredom a few times, the flex shaft on the Dremel once and had to send the Ram in for factory work once. So they have stood up well. Hope this helps some.

Have fun, carve
Harold
