| | Is using a dremel cheating? I was talking with a friend and we are both beginners at carving. He is using a dremmel a lot. I wonder if this is good. Is becoming dependant on a dremel for carving really healthy for learning carving? Is it cheating? Should I avoid using a dremel to carve? Will it hinder the learning of true carving skills? |

| | Re: Is using a dremel cheating? I moved this because it does not belong in the "Authors" forum.... plus you would get better answers here. Thanks for the nice clear title.
Also, this was recently discussed....I'll try to link the previous thread if I can find it.
Edit: Took 10 seconds: Cheating?
More: dremel Does "hand carved" imply hand tools?

| | Re: Is using a dremel cheating? Only if you want it to be! Many use power and some only power to carve with. Some believe it is cheating but most don't It is hand carved because you use your hand to hold the dremel. Just my take on it. However, maybe the Chosen Ones will answer it also. |

| | Re: Is using a dremel cheating? Nate .. Even though I carve with a knife .. Using power is not cheating ..
Alot of carvers use power because of physical handicaps with their hands and I use a dremel often to finish sand my pieces ..
Their great little tools .. But a word to the wise .. If your going to carve with a dremel .. the dust is going to be a nunsiance .. So please use a mask or some type of ventilation to keep from breathing it ..
Good Luck
Gene

| | Re: Is using a dremel cheating? Using dynamite isn't cheating, it will remove wood, just a little hard to control at times. My point, if it works, use it! JMHO |

| | Re: Is using a dremel cheating? You use dynamite, too, Bob?? Heck, I thought I was the only one. I use it quite often on relief carving. If things don't look quite right, one stick under it, a short fuse, and WHAT A RELIEF!

| | Re: Is using a dremel cheating? Nothin to do with mines.......years ago I was out fishing with a buddy from the DNR and ol' Toivo. Fished for about 2 hours with no bites at all. Finally ol' toivo reached under the seat, pulled out a 1/4 stick of dynamite, stuch a primer in it with about 6" of fuse lit the darn thing and threw it over the side. About 5 seconds later the thing went off and a dozen nice walleyes floated up.
My DNR buddy kinda looked at me, and said something to Toivo along the lines that because we saw him do that we were going to have to arrest him. Toivo didn't miss a beat, pulled another stick out, stuck in a primer, lit the fuse and threw it to my DNR buddy........whereupon Toivo said; "You gonna fish or cut bait?"
