I have been using Dremels with flex shaft for the past year or so and I just bought the Foredom - it's fantastic, so much better than the Dremel its worth every penny.

Keoma, Do you want the tools for detail or shaping and hogging off wood? I use the 1/4 HP Foredom with a big hunkin Typhoon burr for hogging off wood and for detail work I use a Brasseler "Upower" which has connections for two hand peices. When I demo at shows and stuff like that, I use my RAM 45. It's very compact and great for traveling. Also, RAM has a trade in program for hand peices where they will actually take your old hand peice and give a brand new one at a good discount. Keep in mind that most of these highspeed tools use the same handpeices so they are interchangable with other machines. I hope this helps. Give me a hollar if you need anything else!!! I recently purchased a WEcheer heavy duty models 330,1/4 hp, what a difference, I took my Dremel and found the nearest garbage can, I still have a Sears flex shaft that just as bad. Pay the bucks you'll enjoy every minute you use it. The 1/4 shanks handle like it was a 1/8 and more than enough power, I usually use solid carbide, high helical for roughing out, no kick back.

Does anyone have experience with the various air turbine carvers,
I see there are at least three makes.
1. Turbocarver Can't find a price
2. Powercrafter for about $350.00
3. Rotorazer for about $150.00

Is there a way to determine the best unit and best price?

Dremels are inexpensive so I use them as throwaway tools. I buy three at a time and use them up in less than a year. I carve 30 hours a week and I use my Dremels about 50% of the time along with the Mastercarver ProlFlex, the MasterCarver micro motor and the Proxxon micro motor. I give them hard service. Typically the switches are first to go. The Proxxon seems to last longer but it's not quite as powerful as the Dremel.

Nobody seems to like dremel products? Thats to bad, since I've just bought a 400 xpr.Anybody out there want to tell me how they've had the same dremel for twenty years??? I'm only doing small carvings and have only had the tool for about a month and a half with no problems so far. I hang it from a chain and use the flex shaft to keep the dust out of the motor. Anyway I was going out of the country for a while and thought I would buy a backup to take with me. Requirements are small size, durable and not a bank account drainer. Any advise would be great.

About dremel rotary tool, I disagree with a post that says that are "unexpensive" tools, that term is relative, one dremel might cost my whole income in six months !.
I have used my first dremel for 6 years, using it 6 days a week , 6 hours per day, now a have a second one for two years. I just have changed coals once. The secret is knowing how far it can go , how fast, and most of all the accesories you use. I make my own accesories, and so far it had been wonderful. Please remember that the world is wide and the rest of the world is not like USA, there are people that might be good carvers and do not have money to buy expensive tools. Please try to imagine the tools used 300 years ago, and they made wonderful things, money is not all in life .

I agree Tito, I met a great carver
in Iquitos peru who was carving Tagua nuts with screwdrivers modified into gouges. He wanted me to bring him a rotary tool from the united states next time I came down. I bought one and loved how easy it was to carve tagua with it.
I would like to know more about what accessories you have made.
