Default Powercarving tools

Okay, so I'm interested in buying a Foredom power carver or Wecheer or something like that. I've been watching ebay. Are there any models I need to stay away from. So the basic components are the motor, the flex shaft, the hand tool, and a foot pedal. Is this right? Are there any other parts I need to make sure I get so I have everything I need to use it? Thanks.

Most of the shaft tool kits come with just about everything, basics wise. The motor, shaft, at least one handpiece and some different sized collets in case you use a variety of sizes in your bits. Some come with a foot control too..... a tube of lube for the shaft.... You will probably have to buy the bits all separate. The basic handpiece they come with is usually the large hand piece. It will take any sized collet but really, most folks prefer to use a smaller handpiece for smaller bits. Using the big one is awkward. You would have to buy the smaller (slimmer) handpiece separate if you want one.

Also the reciprocating gouge hand pieces seem to be popular with some. It would be extra. Make sure that what ever brand you buy, it has the quick change handpiece set up. If you have more than one handpiece and want to change it, you just pull the one off and pop the next one on. There are a lot of brands out there. Weecher, Buffalo, Foredom and a few more. I would stick to a good brand. Just because of service and availability of parts. Many of the handpieces are interchangable on different shaft tools which is nice.
