First of all I have been carving my first submarine out of oak, I have the main part all done by hand chisel and sanding, now I will get down to the detailing. I was all set to order the Foredom 5240, with an extra H30 handpiece, and the WeCheer reciprocating head with gouges. Now in one of the post yesterday "Dileon" says that may not work with hardwoods and that is all I plan to use, please let me know if it will work ok with hardwoods. The reason I was going with the WeCheer attachment is that I live in a Condo and don't know if my neighbors could hear me or not when I was using the mallet and Hand Chisels. I will be gone most of the day hopefully I will get a lot of help. Thanks in Advance Subcarver |

All of the recips that I have been around have been a lot louder than a mallet and chisel. If noise is a factor, I would stick with rotary for detailing.

My friend the first thing you might need to do is talk to your neighbours. They may not have noticed your hobby at all. I do know from bitter experience that not talking can lead to annoyance and hard feelings (I was the noisy party in this case). I use a little Dremel 400 with rotary burrs exclusively and even that to me can be loud and particularly aggravating due to the constant noise. Not that I have any worries about noise here as the only neighbour is 50 yards away, is a farmer and makes all sorts of noise at all sorts of hours. |

Ok, I power rough out my work...using the two inch extreme saburr burrs. A person can find me under a major pile of sawdust when I hog my wood. Today...I was totally covered and both of our cars where under a pile of sawdust that looked like a snow storm blew in. My two industrial fans, plus a small air system was not worth two cents. Some hard wood will carve easy with the SR, but now the guava log (which is really hard)...she will hardly skin the surface in fact the TX does not like the wood either but.... as far as detail no problem with really good burrs. But this is just me, I would never rough out in an condo...unless you move out everything in the house ...due to saw dust....which you will need a super nice air system to suck out all that mess. But if you are just going to use a power carver...with blades and do small detail work ...noise yes.... I wear ear protection that has an i pod hooked into it. For extreme detail work...a micro carver is the best. Alot of people hate power carving because of the saw dust as you need good eye protection, and wear a good dust mask. I do not use the Foredom for much detail work...only roughing out...this is where I need the power. Honestly if I was in your place, I stick with chisels for rough out and ect,...and get a good micro carver for the detailing...mine makes very little noise. just a thought...Di

Maybe my log in was a little confusing, I live in a 1500 sq ft condo , with another 1500 sq ft in the basement, I have a seperate wookshop in the basement for my winemakiing and modeling. I have hand chiseled and sanded out the basic form of my 44" in submarine, now I want to get into the fine detailing. I have looked at the foredom with the wecheer add on, no I am wondering if the Mastercarver with the more power might be better for working on oak. I checked with my neighbors and they said they could not hear my chiseling. So now i am considering the mastercarver with a reciporcating head for some carving. Thanks for all the help. Subcarver |
