Hi All, As my name suggests I am mainly a woodturner, but don't hold that against me Smile, I have been recently going through a lot of previous posts but could not find an answer to my question. I do apologise in advance if this has been covered but I recently (today) ordered an Optima micro-motor for detailing my carved turnings and the bit that I use most in my flex shaft tool is a 1/8 shank 1/8 round ball double-cut tungsten bur. So my question, finally, is this too large a bur for a micro motor? I know, I probably should have found this out first but it is often said that I do things backwards. I was also wondering what the maximum diameter bur you use in your micro motors is. Again, sorry if this has been asked before. Thanks Josh p.s. This is a fantastic forum.Ice Cream |

It will pose no problem whatsoever. I routinely use 1/4" Typhoon in mine.

Doug, I have to ask.....what brand of Micromotor do you have that will take a 1/4 inch shank? Did I misunderstand your answer? I didn't think any micromotor even comes with a collet that large. I am sure I'm having a blond moment here and misunderstood what you meant.... Could you please clarify that? |

I have an Optima and a Brasseler. He asked about the bur, not the shaft. I use a 1/4" bur on a 3/32 shaft. He could also use a 1/4" bur on a 1/8" shaft. His 1/8 " bur on his 1/8" shaft is what he was wondering about and should be fine. Read his question again Susan.

I thought I was probably having a blond moment, Doug. Thanks for clearing it up for me.

I should have known to be VERY clear. My wife used to be a blonde and I have 3 blonde daughters. And yes, I send them every blonde joke I find.

Well, I suspected that I was mistaken but I had to ask....I mean, if there was a micromotor out there that could handle 1/4 shafts, I would just HAVE TO BUY ONE! Whether I needed it or not. I mean, can't you just hear Tim-the-tool-man-Taylor grunting in the back ground???? I would want one of those......wouldn't you? But yes, I am a blond by birth, and blond-er by choice. Years of peroxide does terrible things to the brain. |
