Default Last support post carving

Carved this owl into the last of my two support posts.

This is supposed to be his back, with his head turned towards the door coming out of our house, like he heard a noise. The narrowest point is the neck, wound up about 5½" thick, between that and the outsides (about 1½" thick in the center) I don't think support strength will be an issue.

This is supposed to be his front (which is actually on a side you can only see from the neighbors yard).

I carved everything so that any snow or rain would drain out of this, under cut the crossed toes so it wouldn't hold water.

Far from perfect, face should have been flatter, shouldn't have started out so high on the face side, not real thrilled with the very dark stain I used inside the "tree" area but what do you think of it overall?

Thanks ~Mike

I think this is very cool!
We don't have supports like that on our house(mobile home), but someday when we remodel our kitchen, I would love to have it look like the inside of a log cabin and have something on this order for my kitchen. Thanks for the inspiration.

Don't stop to get "picky!" The concept and execution are outstanding. I'm a big fan of incorporated cut-outs as you've done.

Very nice work! I like the really dark area surrounding the owl - great contrast!
Although I know it would be a lot of work, my only suggestion would be to burn or carve in feathers on the "front" side of the owl...

Mike,

I think the support post turned out just fine. Like the way that it greets you as you come out the door.

Safe Carving and God Bless,

Mark
