So I finished the first project with my new Automach, and overall I'm pretty happy with it. I used a #8 sweep for pretty much the whole thing - I really liked the deep texture it gave the tree - reminds me of a shag-bark hickory or something. I also like the juxtaposition of the "rough" carving with the sleek and shiny chrome of the Jag emblem. I have a lot to learn, but I'm having a ball! Thanks to you guys who've helped me along with the project - appreciate it! |

Looks like some nice clean cuts. Did you find the grain behaved differently as you worked your way around the log.

Thanks guys! David, yes I found spots that just wouldn't behave as I went around the log - didn't matter which way I went at them. Don't know if that's the nature of the beast or if this particular piece of walnut was giving me fits due to some possible interior cracking, but it worked out OK in the end. I just sold my Delta bandsaw (I still have my Craftsman Professional - 8" resaw) and am getting ready to sell my Delta 6"x48" belt / 9" disc combo sander. Didn't use either of those tools as much as I thought I would, and I'm freeing up shop space (and $) so I can reconfigure things a bit and set up primarily carving. Getting ready to build an adjustable aux carving table and I'm gonna order me a TOMZ sharpener! : D I'll post pics of my shop after I get it re-situated a bit. |
