Kathy: Try one of the Monster bits. They're actually edged bits, like a mill cutter. They cut much cleaner than the Kutzall or Typhoon bits. You can get them in several different sizes with 1/4 inch shaft and 1/8 inch shaft. Wood Carving Supply, among others, carries them.

I think if you can find adouble cut carbide bit, you will elimate a lot of your problems.
They cut clean and smooth but, can be aggresive on softer woods, go slow.

| | Re: Empowerment of power Claude & Bill--thanks guys will check out your suggestions. I do need to get some additional bits for sure. Actually I'd like to be able to hog out the deepest part of a relief using my power carver. Would these bits work and what shape would I need? Thanks again

| | Re: Empowerment of power Thanks Alice and Bill for the recommendations will check them out. I just drew a pattern from Tom Wolfe's pattern book on dogs onto a basswood block. It's a Jack Russell Terrier which I plan to use my power carver. The carving will be about 5 inches tall by 2 inches depth and about 4 inches long. I'll cut the rough-out tomorrow on my bandsaw. I'm looking forward to the challenge of a new tool.

But do hope to use some power on the background foilage and duck. Thank you for the sanding information too. I know I have a lot to learn and hope at some point I can share as you all have done.
Thanks again,
Kathy | Kathy, one day you will get the reciprocating hand piece for your Foredom, and those hand gouges will get put in a drawer somewhere, forgotten .
as for Typhoon or Kutzall, that is personal preference but I will take Typhoon over Kutzall any day. I think they cut smoother and don't grab as much. As other's have said, the Typhoon burs that came with the unit are the courser ones for roughing. Get yourself one like you got there, the 1/4 cylinder, but in "fine", it's almost like sanding, only really, really, fast

| | Re: Empowerment of power I'll have to say amen to the Typhoons. I use only the blue ones as they cut plenty fast and leave a fairly smooth finish. I use them in a 1/4 " for the Foredom and in 3/32" for my micromotors. I have Kutzalls but rarely use them anymore since the Typhoons came out. |

| | Re: Empowerment of power I'll second that motion. I have a full collection of Kutzalls but much prefer the Typhoons. They seem to work a lot better in my Dremel.

| | Re: Empowerment of power Thanks everyone, I did after looking at all the bits mentioned decided on the Typhoon. I ordered a few of the sizes I thought I'd use the most both course and fine. They should arrive later this week.
Yeah I have already eye balled the different hand pieces. I think I'd like a thinner handpiece. The one that came with my Foredom seems a little large for my hands. But I'm making due for a while. Power tools like hand tools--it always seems there is always one, two, three, four etc. more tools one needs. LOL
Thanks again, I know I'm going to have lots more questions for you all.
