I've never had the "moolah" to buy any fancy power carving equipment but I do have a Mr. Dremel with handpiece extension. That said, I prefer to rut and dig! When the day comes that I figure that I've mastered my hand tools or my hands get to the point that I have to use a power tool or give up carving then I guess I'll join the "enlightened" crowd.

THANK YOU BOB and Susan too ,without you Susan would it happened????
I am grateful maybe now I will feel at home?
I have Powertools hanging all over the workshop and my husband (tall) has to watch his head. But the hand pieces are hard to change for me so I have all different hand pieces on those machines if he is not around then I am not stuck, but my favorite tools is the Arbortech from Australia ,I have had one from 1999 and I have them all except the Powerchisel. They take wood off quickly and that is what I like.
Thanks again
Alice

I feel strange here. ing after Alice in Wonderland may not be a coincidence. I think I've stepped through the looking glass into a strange, new world. I feel as though I'm losing my edge (pun intended), and everything is turning very fast. It's making me dizzy and I fear I'm spinning out of control. Where's Yoda when I need someone to save me from the Dark Side? Mike

Alice, I too have problems changing handpieces. I recently found that if I keep the shaft tip well lubed it works much easier, not everytime depending on my hands that day, but it does help. I would say the way the handpieces attach to the shaft is the only improvement that could be made on the power carvers. P.S. Alice, you should feel at home here with or without power!

I've got 2 bandsaws from dad who says, "I dont get it. I've got five sons and my daughter does the woodworking!" A scrollsaw from hubby, and 2 Dremels that help me sand the spots I could never get to otherwise (especially doing mini Santas) Then there's a power-sander I use from time to time too. Without these tools, I'd still be roughing out my first Santa!

Ok, I give up! Where did the subject "Glad to see power carving being given an area of its own" in Pauls 1st comment come from? Sounds like an already existing Thread I missed.

Great to see a power carving category.Although if I carve a stylized bird with a chainsaw and a dremel where would I post it? Seriously though, power carving begins with a bandsaw, I remember roughing out carvings with a #8 gouge and 3 hours later having produced what takes me 5 minutes on the bandsaw, if that. I wanted to do bigger work,so I got into chainsaw carving.Hey life is short, and carving time is precious, and inventory is always low, thank goodness.I hand carve all my bark spirits, chainsaw carve, and use dremels and die grinders with router bits(think dremel on steroids).I suspect this column is for foredom type tools, and that's great. Because I want one,and I liike to research tools before I invest, so seeing what people do with what tools ought to help.High end bird carving with every vein burnt in just flips me out.Carving, texturing, burning, painting, the skill and patience,I can barely imagine doing that. I really just want to experience all aspects of woodcarving, and excel in at least one. And sometimes having new, different tools can lead a guy in new exciting directions. Plus I want one of everything!

What a splendid idea, a Power Carving section. How did we miss that all this time? Well done Susan for connecting the dots and for BobD for setting it up.

Having had to include power carving in my method of carving a few years ago was quite a revelation to me, and it now has become my favorite. I started using power to just rough out, because of my lack of strength and endurance, but soon found that I could do things with power that were superior to doing it with edged tools. I still resort to my gouges, knives and chisels for the majority of my finishing work, and power will never be that helpful to me in shipmodelling, but I find myself resorting to it in longer in carvings, than just roughing out.

It is great to have the options, power and edged tools, they allow us to stretch our skills and try new areas we haven't explored before.

Well done Susan and BobD, and thank you.

Bob

Dah!!
I asked earlier about where is the thread of Power Carving? I'm so used to just reading the "New s" each day I never thought of looking thru the topic subjects within the forum. Since nobody answered and posts were still coming in I thought to myself I'm missing something and finally figured it out.
I also am glad this topic subject has been added since just this winter I purchased a Foredom. Now all I have to do is listen to the vast knowledge of our members input and expand my time of keeping up with a new forum topic.

So little time, so much to learn.

Glad you found it. You know the old saying, "Even a blind hog will find an acorn once in a while". LOL
