Default Egg carving

Has anyone tried egg carving with a rotary tool rather than an air turbine? I am trying to decide which way to go with the tool and I want to be able to use wood, glass, egg, etc.

Get a $30 dental air turbine from Ebay. I have one and it works great. I am getting pictures of some completed projects today that I will get posted. I like it better than the turbines being sold to do what you talking about and the price is just a bonus.

Isn't the angled head of the hand piece awkward to work with?

Hi Ron
Just another option, go to Google type in Ultracarver watch the video and look at what it does. You can carve on wood, glass, rocks, plastics or what ever you want to. It does not use air it uses vacume from a small dust collector or home sweeper. Top speed is 120,000 rpm's . Don't listen to the price on the video its wrong the total cost is $59.95 to S&H. I got one the other day and it seems to do what they say it will.

ronboggs... I like the angle.. It gives me more options for angle of attack. It took a little getting use to but after about 30 min I didn't notice.

Not sure I would use Vac instead of pressure... Seems to me it would be the same except you would need to filter the air going into the hand piece to keep the trash out of the turbine... I work with pressure and vac all the time with my business and pressure is much easier to deal with and come by... A cheap air compressor is all you need... By the way an air compressor is a vacuum pump also if you connect to the intake instead of the compression side.

I have been away for a while. Now that summer is winding down, I can get back to some serious carving! I was reading this post and I saw that Magicman purchased an ultracarver. I was wondering how well it works and if it is worth the money?
I also looked at some dental lab hand pieces that are the same as the turbo carver, except better quality and cheaper priced.

I like the Ultracarver so far, its not a wood hogger but it does well at detail. I have no problem with it so far.

Thank you. I plan to get one. I think that it's a good way to get started in engraving. I think that I will get the videos on gun stock carving and scrimshaw.
could you post some of your work when you are done ?
