maryjo, thank you for starting this thread!

TUKLONITA, thank you for sharing and your (SCRUVAC) hand-held dust collector sounds interesting and so simple.

James S, thank you for answering my questions your unit sounds like a good one and a real work horse. Certainly one to consider

Dave, you always manage to bring a smile to my face when I read your posts. Thank you, also for your good advice.

Kathy

Dave, thank you for the concern, but GEEZ did you have to put it here LOL!!!!!!!
Yeah, I had that same thing in January--lots of folks have it right now so I've got company with my misery. I'm feeling much better now it only took $70 worth of meds.

So far from what I have read they all sound like excellent models, but I'll let you judge for yourself.

PS: I made a promise to myself that I will not turn on my power carver until I find and get my dust collector. I've only had my Foredom Power Carver about a week.

I would like some input from some of your experts out there. This thread has really got my attention (scared me). I have been using a grizzly desk top dust collector but it is only good to 30 microns. My Carving area is the sun room which is part of the main house. I can wear a mask but the link reading in this thread said that I am endangering my whole family by not properly venting.

Please give me your opinion of this:

http://www.grizzly.com/products/h2936

It is a portable vaccume standing table dust collector. It captures dust to .5 microns at 1600 cfm.

The working surface is 39-1/2" x 28"

It is expensive but if it would do the job it would be worth it. I would use it to sand on and use my foredom on.

The other option that I am considering is this cyclonic collector. I would put it outside my shop and run a 6" hose through the window into the sun room. I could then hook up a laptop unit or make my own table unit. Here is the link to the one I am looking at. It is good to .2 microns.

Would I still need a top vent hood?

I am installing a bathroom vent in the celing of the room I am using to create negative preassure while I am working so that the dust particles do not migrate into my home.

Can you get different filters for the grizzly that filter down finer?

I use an old army gas mask with the two canisters not sure if it filters the dust particles but it does biological warfare so I would think it does a good job. They are inexpensive and can be purchased at the local Army Surplus stores. I also make sure that when I sand I do it outside and when there is a wind and stay upwind from the dust. Just my two cents worth.

Bob, I have the Grizzly desktop G9955, I do like it alot.

I have been searching the internet to find a 10" x 20" HEPA filter but I can't find one. I just bought a new filter at lowes, Maximum Alegen but it does not say what the filter microns is???

If anyone knows where to get a HEPA filter 10x20 please let me know.

If you are careful, you can cut down a filter to make it fit. I've cut down filters for my parent's furnace on several occasions. Just peel back the cardboard around the outside, cut the filter to size, and fit the cardboard back around. For good measure, I added that self-adhesive weather-stripping foam (like what you use between the cab and bed of a pickup truck).
