| | Re: dropped foredom Just looked at the NSK online, very similar, but it looks like the Foredom 1050 is a step up. Does your friend have any more at the discounted rate? |

| | Re: dropped foredom Actually, NSK and Foredom are about equal. If you ask Mark Yunt, they're better.....
As for my friend, I got it through him but it was shipped directly from Foredom. He is a rep and he ordered it and had it shipped directly to me. He doesn't have them in stock.... He does this for students too. Take a class from him and he would probably order you one with the same terms.
We became friends many years ago when I hosted a couple of power carving classes of his at our house, out in my husband's work shop. I can pm you the contact info if you wanted to take a class. They winter in Fla and summer in Conn. Let me know. But don't put NSK down. It is a very good product. NSK users would argue that their machines are the very best. I started with Foredom and like it. It's personal preference mostly.... |

| | Re: dropped foredom the only reason I said the foredom was better was because of the brushless motor and the higher rpms. Otherwise they look like very similar units! I didn't mean to put NSK down. |

| | Re: dropped foredom Hooked, do you currently have a micro motor? If you are trying to decide if it would be something you would get a lot of good out of, try a lower priced model. I bought a Mastercarver last year because my old micro motor went down for repairs and I had a deadline to meet for the gallery.... I wasn't expecting much from the new unit and was pleasantly surprised. It is a nice unit. It is not brushless but it does run 50,000 rpms and has high torque as micromotors go. I was so impressed that I bought a second handpiece. The Foredom 1045 power source and the Master carver power source have the same connectors for the handpieces so I can swap them out. If I didn't like Master carve, I would not have bought the second handpiece....
It is a good unit especially for the price. And where I bought it, the guy didn't even charge me shipping. My only complaint is that they don't give you the 3/32 collet with it. They give you the 1/8 collet and an adapter which is is just a sleeve that fits down inside the 1/8 collet and it allows you to use the 3/32 shaft size bits. I don't like the adapter and finally broke down and bought the regular 3/32 collet for it, as well as a 1/16 collet for dental tools. Just a thought but you wouldn't have to invest a small fortune to find out if micro motors are for you or not..... |

| | Re: dropped foredom Hello Hooked!
Thank you for your comments,,,I'm glad you liked the site. The NSK ,,a leader in dental tools so you know the quality is there,is also a brushless motor. I can't say one is better than the other though. I haven't personally seen the Foredom or used it. I'm sure it's an excellent tool if the flex shaft I have is any indication of their quality. Besides , I've had mine for so long it's an extension of me. My only basis for comparison is the other micor motor I own,,as well as using others that my friends have. Compared to just those,,I prefer my NSK. I think that no matter what you get,,you'll fall in love with it as well.
As far as your other questions go as to how you get to a certain point. Easy,,just start. That alone sets you on the path. As far as I'm concerned I haven't "arrived" anywhere yet,,,I too am on the journey. There is more I want to accomplish,,things I want to carve,,things I'd like to do much better. So don't think I'm doing anything you can't do.Persistence and determination are the key.If you want it,,and that's what you go after,,then that's how you get someplace. You know the old adage,,the longest journey starts with a single step.
I originally started just carving birds in Tupelo. That's where my experience with power carving comes from. It doesn't carve well with chisels. Since then all I use are chisels. That's all I have used to carve what's on my site ( besides the birds ) and the hundreds of pieces not shown. The micro motors and flex shafts rarely see the light of day any longer. I don't use them for roughing out,,finishing,,nor detailing. It's all chisels for me excusively and the work I now do. |

| | Re: dropped foredom Hey,,no problem,,,I didn't even catch it. Besides,,,we knew who you meant,,spelling isn't my strong point,,,it's the idea that counts.
Thanks for the considerate gesture though,,, |

| | Re: dropped foredom I do work in the dental industry, but my company only sells dental implants. We do sell a surgical unit made ny NSK, but I really have no contact with anyone from NSK. As far as burrs, we don't sell any. I can asks dentists that I know for old burrs, but they are all 1/16th and I don't have anything that will hold a 1/16th. I saw a huge catalog today at the local dental school that was all burrs. Those burrs looked like a lot better quality than what i have seen at woodworking shops, but I am sure they are expensive also! | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
